alarm clock for the “difficult cases”

for all those that sleep long and always find ways to switch off the alarm clock before waking up there is help: *grins at Anna*

This alarm clock ejects pieces of a puzzle when buzzing and won’t switch off before you have found all pieces of the puzzle (which are scattered around your room).

It’s cruel.. but highly effective ;)

a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

M101

They really seem to show off once more before the Hubble space telescope will be decomissioned in 2011. This picture can be found on Hubblesite.org, being the most detailled view of a galaxy ever.. and it’s beautiful, even ;)
Makes a beautiful wallpaper.. *hint* *hint*

To get an idea how detailled the picture is: The original image is 15852 x 12392 pixels resolution, sporting 500MB of data. It features ~1 billion stars. The whole galaxy is expected to contain ~1 trillion stars. The light on the photo has been emitted 25 million years ago. Such things remind me of how small we (our planet) are and how precious our little life is.. not more than 100 years, most of the time ending even earlier.

Death and rebirth

My Mainboard did not survive the moving to Aachen, it seems.. 2 weeks after moving in a capacitor blew on my ASUS A7M266-D, rendering this beautiful dual-cpu board unusable :'(

As it is a quite exotic server/workstation board, spare parts are expensive as hell and a replacement cost ~750 Dollars (no joke) because ASUS recently declared it “end of life” making it a “most wanted” board for those that can’t afford changing hardware.
Suckers :P

Now, having good friends *hugs Sir Cubbi* I was given a replacement board. And I did what usually never works, I just plugged it in, connected my hardware and booted windows. After 30 minutes of hardware detection, a lot of restarting and a new activation of Windows XP I was able to use my system again. I’m running Cubbi’s 800Mhz “Thunderbird” processor now but I don’t really see much difference in performance from my 2x1500Mhz that I had before. That should teach me a lesson not to go for speed anymore in the future…

Ok.. this saves me from painful reinstallation of Windows. *grin*
(at least till I get a decent replacement.. dual core athlon or whatever)
And by the way: Fedora Core 5 will be released March 15th…
Please, please keep me away from the Install CDs till I finish my exams :D

It’s still 5 days to go till the Biochemistry exam. I must not fail this one!

we are sinking

it’s been some time i have posted a video but this one really warmed my heart :)
I just LOVE the german accent of “the german coast guard”
sinking

for the rest, I am in Amsterdam for the week to study, we spent around 800 euro yesterday at IKEA (yes, they are open on sunday) and are making us a home finally. There is a table and some chairs, now.
I cannot get photos online at the moment because my PC died unexpectedly and the laptop is too old to process the images from the digital camera but as long as I have memory chips it should be fine :)

Oh, I have gotten a little sick… again. Stress really is poison for the immune system :P
Not the best circumstances if you are supposed to study for your exams but at least I passed the bioinformatics test so my spirits are up and I am happy. Hannes, a friend at the university has provided me with his biochemistry script (including his comments), that should make it easy to learn for the next exam. yay! :)

life is good if you have friends!

and chicken meat is very cheap at the moment, I wonder why ;)

paranoid?

today I had some kind of an argument with Anna, about the disclosure of our address in Amsterdam. It was mainly about me not trying to undisclose personal details on the internet, like when sending mails to ebay-people that contain a link to your website where pictures of family and cat are to be found and also the postal address and phone number and so on…

According to her one has to protect oneself e.g. from the occasional psycho that might be disagreeing with me on my last email and decide to stalk on me (or poison the cat)

According to me, one has to undisclose as much information as possible to the world in order to show that there is nothing to hide. That gives no vulnerability.

I spent a lot of time thinking what it is that makes us require privacy in our lives and why we demand privacy… Is it really neccessary to be anonymously hidden in a big city?
Is my world really too idealistic to be true? Can’t we all just live together without suspecting the weirdest things when looking at each other? Well, always set the case that you get a chance at all to look at the other person, usually there are just too many to look at individuals, or they threathen you if you make eye contact by looking at them.

I guess I am just spoiled from the people from my village, where everyone knows everyone.. yeah, that sounds awful but it’s a good feeling that you can leave your door or window open at night and if you forget the keys inside your car once (or the mobile) it will NOT be stolen 1 hour later..

well, 20 points minus on my “perfect world” scale.. reality sucks :P

chaos

I never thought this would be possible but I managed:
In a 12 square-meter room I managed to lose something and not find it back.
Now, nothing special, happens all the time. And if it was a screw or some small item I would definitely agree but what I’m missing is: My pants. Crazy!
I am writing a test at 2 p.m., I don’t want to write it without them :)

Update: found them 2 hours later, now I can leave the house.

who’s your valentine?

When I was at the supermarket today, the woman at the counter handed me flowers. I really didn’t know what she was doing so I gave her a really stupid look and asked “what’s that for?”
She looked at me and said “it’s for valentine’s day” and smiled.
I had completely forgot about valentine’s! – And I’m not used to getting flowers so I stuttered something like “shoudn’t I give you flowers actually? I mean, I never get flowers..”
Judging by the volume of the conversation that erupted afterwards among the other women around the counter, I guess that I must have blushed a lot. ^^

Anna, I love you very much and I hope I don’t have to bring you flowers to make you feel that.
(although, it feels niiiiiiiiiice to receive flowers, I have to admit) :P

student kitchen

Sunday morning, university dormitory of your choice.

kueche
MPEG movie, ~1.8MB

I don’t intend to make this place a dump for silly movies but I laughed so much – probably because I can identify myself so well :)
Well, at least with the kitchen :D

New home 2

Since yesterday I also have an address in Aachen. :)

I am living in the Kullen Wohnheim now, one of the many flats/dorms for students in the city. for 130 Euro per month they provide me with a small room, heating, water, electricity and broadband internet.
There is even included someone that cleans the toilets and the public rooms. Oh, the luxury ;)

I still have not seen all of my flatmates but I guess I will have plenty of time to get to know them later.
For the moment I am just tired and happy not to move any boxes anymore. My voice has returned aswell.

Now it’s time to catch up with all the stuff that I neglected during the last weeks at school and get at least some of my exams done. But not now.. now I want to sleep again :P

the big move

It’s done!!!

Our new home is in Amsterdam! :D

I am exhausted, tired, all my muscles hurt, I am having a cold and barely can speak, the house is a mess but I am happy.. incredibly happy that we got this appartement. :)
