diva-dog

honestly… if I were that attractive, I would also just lie around and look beautiful… Or.. (wait for it)

Grace-Ful 😂🙈

Paris with doggo

so travelling to paris with 2 teenagers and a husky is possible!

Had to upgrade the car a little bit but she really can do long drives with occasional breaks to stretch her legs.

I had to adjust to a different lifestyle, mainly sitting in bars and waiting for the kids to come back from museums and palaces drinking wine and eating croissant… but I can get used to that.

What Grace likes

Baguette
Frenchmen
hotel beds

What Grace doesn’t like

public transport in Paris
tourism
not being served in a cafe

fathers day (my first!)

Today is fathers day – my first one :)

Sander was here last tuesday and made some photos, that guy is just good!
Instead of expressing my bad feelings that I don’t write much of lately (blame the small guy!) I will just put the pictures that he took online.

laughing

Thanks for this, Sander.. next baby we will hire you for the “gebortekaartjes”!

P.S.: Can anyone tell me why he frowns so much? ;)

shiny new hardware

I got myself new toys (finally!) :)
n800_1 n800_2 e60

I got a “compensation payment” from my previous employer, unexpected, that is. And such money needs to be spend immediately :P

The Nokia N800 “Internet tablet” – basically a 800×480 touchscreen that runs linux ;)
Well, it’s a bit more than that. The screen is just amazing, featuring 220 DPI (!) displaying virtually any PDF or website without having to zoom.
WPA2 WLAN encryption, (unfortunately, there is no VPN client, yet.. but as the OS is Debian-based, it can be only a matter of time till someone ports vpnc to it’s developer platform, Maemo).
(I am waiting for Skype (with video) and a good PIM, then this device is perfect!!!)
If there is no WLAN access, it connects through my mobile phone, using bluetooth.
I can listen to AAC+ music streams (like SomaFM) on it, read my email, well… it does almost anything I want ;)
Once I have trained the handwriting recognition, I can also skip the iPhone-style on-screen thumb-keyboard (basically a neat idea, but so slooow…)

Also: I got myself a Nokia E60 “business” cellphone, which has no camera but amazing PIM and document/internet functions and VoIP over WLAN capabilities! So whenever I am at home it switches from “cell phone” to VoIP, how cool is that? ;)
And finally… Now I can sync with my iCal and address book again..

I like its “retro” look a lot, now that people buy phones by colour and ringtone-variety, I buy a phone that looks old but at a close look has fantastic functions.
A N95 or N73 would also have been interesting but I realized that VoIP and long battery life is way more important than having a multimedia computer with you. (besides, that’s what I have the n800 for) :P
One device that does everything somehow.. well.. I tried that with the C500 “smartphone” (which is understatement, it runs windows mobile) :P and I decided I don’t want a smartphone anymore. I will wait till voice recogniton is better and people have PADDs everywhere.

Hey, wait! There is a “PADD” skin, look here

long range wireless lan

Sometimes when I find the time, I play with wireless lan components, trying to find out how to enhance the reach of my wireless network using self-made antennas, professional antennas,
cd-spindel cAntenna
tweaking wlan-cards or modifying a router (link) to get a couple of meters more out of the network or to be able to transmit from the basement go the attic.
Using 2 modified Linksys-Routers and 2 of the cAntennas, I was able to get a wireless link over more than 1km.

But the guys at Defcon seriously overdid it this time, breaking their own world record from last year, where they achieved a 55 mile wireless link.
More than 200 km of wireless connection without amplification!

The final result was a full 11 Mbps data transfer rate over a distance of 125 miles, a new world record for an unamplified wireless networking connection.

I just love extreme technology :D

sometimes…

Well, the plan was to get up early, get my ass on the bike and go to the station, taking the train at 8:30 and being in Amsterdam to meet Anna at eleven.

Training was quite hard yesterday so I overslept. Nothing new, yea.. but then, the part with the bike got difficult. It wasn’t there anymore.

And of course it was raining hard. Well, whoever god is responsible for this is not nice.. but he/she has style and takes care the setting is correct. :(

— 3 days later —

well, I have to take back some of the things I said :)
Amsterdam is the most crazy, colorful, intense.. I don’t know what else museum to walk in that I have ever seen. I wonder if you can get bored there at all…

It was an incredibly beautiful weekend with Anna, I wish we could walk there more often.
Monday I was depressed ;)

it’s done!!!

As of today, we have a new Doctor in the family.
Anna today successfully defended her thesis and has been awarded her Ph.D.
Cheers~! :D :D :D

during the defense after the defense
it's over proud? ;)

Sander, thank you for the B/W picture, it’s just wonderful!

Siepke and Servers

God, I am so happy this cat is back.. I don’t know what I would have done without him.

feet

Anna is writing another summary of her thesis for the press and I am typing my thermodynamics-lecture into the laptop. I decided to do this from now on to memorize the lessons better.

My friday night I spent in the biology-department setting up a new webserver because I accidentially deleted the whole /dev directory by issuing rm -d -r /dev/ instead of ./dev (note the small but fatal dot!)
At 0:00 I arrived in Maastricht, Anna being very mad at me having spent the evening without me once more.

Lesson of the day:
“Never touch a running system!”
Or as the IT-department says:
“Never touch a running system on Friday after 14:00!”

autumn surprises

Autumn, the time of falling leaves and wonderful colours. Time to take long and exhaustive walks through the forest and enjoy the relaxing effects of the indian summer on the mind. (after all we had a lot of stress the last weeks)

While at it, pick up some of the wonderfully coloured leaves and flowers that grow now, they definitely make a nice decoration in your window at this time of the year.

Just never, ever collect any of these things:
rohrkolben
Even if they look beautiful between autum-flowers, after 2 days at the window (especially if you are away for these days) they explode into a huge mass of seeds that you’d never expect to hide in these 20cm long things… and they cover your house, your PCs fans, your shoes, everythigng in the house is covered in a layer of this foam-like seeds. And your cat then drags them all over the appartment.

my vaccum can’t handle the amounts that these things have produced, I will have to buy extra bags now.
And also ignore tips from gardeners/relatives to spray them with hairspray to prevent from opening, it DOES NOT WORK! ;)
